Tibbles's special diet

So after consulting with the vet (and spending almost $35 on supplements--and I haven't even found them all, yet) I got this recipe for Tibbles:

2 lbs chicken meat (preferably leg meat, with skins)
3 oz liver
8 oz heart (or 2000 mg taurine)
5 cooked egg whites, chopped fine
2 Tbsp salmon oil (=28 capsules)
2 Tbsp olive oil
1800 mg calcium carbonate
1/2 tsp lite salt with iodine
100 mg B-complex vitamins
3 tablets of One-a-Day max (that's the one I coulnd't find)
20 tablets potassium gluconate
1-2 cups filtered water

And basically, send everything through the grinder. I serve it with added water, making it as soupy as Tibbles can stand it--cats get their water when they eat, and since she's losing so much water, I need to make sure it gets replaced somehow...

Things I learned while making this: dissolve all the pills in water while you're cutting up the meat to send through the grinder. A good way to cook the egg whites is to oil a non-stick pan, and pretend to make scrambled eggs--stir constantly while cooking, and they basically shred into tiny pieces so you don't have to worry about your cat picking them out.

She loves it, fortunately. The vet told me that most cats don't like it very much--cooked egg whites are icky.

This diet is VERY LOW in phosphorous compared to your typical raw diet. Phosphorous, in too high concentration in the blood, is dangerous (though I can't quite remember how, just now--possibly it has to do with phosphorylating proteins that shouldn't be phosphorylated).

I'm so glad she likes it!!!

Did you actually break 28 capsules??? Fun stuff:P

You can get calcium in bulk, online. You don't have to use the tablets. You could probably find potassium gluconate powder, too. Lots of folks use fish oil bottled for pets (I'm using Grizzly Salmon Oil, now, and have used Iceland Pure and Timberwolf Organics, in the past).

I'm told that fish oils oxidize really easily, so it's far better to get the tablets.

I'll have to look into getting calcium and potassium online--if it's cheaper than what the Vitamin Shoppe sells them for, I'm sold.

I've been told that, as well, but you have to use 28 capsules to get 2 tablespoons. One of my dogs needs a tablespoon, per day. I'm not sure she'd love eating 14 capsules, per day. It'd be like a kibble meal! LOL

or how about using dried eggshell powder? a tsp equals 1800 mg of calcium.

fish oils to oxidize easily, but that's also why you should probably wait until serving to add them - throwing it in the freezer may get rid of its beneficial properties.
